Artistic Music Therapy Workshop

Dr. Albornoz defines Artistic Music Therapy (ArMT) as a multi-expressive improvisation model designed for both individuals and groups. This approach serves people with various health conditions or those simply seeking to elevate their vital energy and self-knowledge. To achieve this, the model integrates musical improvisation with other arts and clinical recitals. Its fundamental goals are: 1) to release expressive power, 2) to develop awareness, and 3) to promote the integration of the self (Albornoz, 2013a; 2016b). Furthermore, ArMT encompasses a social practice that Dr. Albornoz describes in her literature as Social Music Therapy. In essence, ArMT is a therapy for life.

In a global practice review for the World Federation of Music Therapy, Chang et al. (2023) described ArMT as a sequence of improvisational procedures and experiences. This model emphasizes the artistic impact on enhancing perception and quality of life. According to the researchers, “Indigenous cultures and their practices were a significant influence on the development of Artistic Music Therapy.” Specifically, the model draws from the ancestral wisdom of the Abya Yala indigenous cultures from the American continent.
